Winter doesn’t have to mean impending doom regarding your children’s health!
But combine the poor nutrition that usually comes with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, with the decreased sun exposure of the fall and winter; vitamin D levels drop, and viruses and bacterial infections seem to spread like crazy.
Our family also has 3 birthdays and our anniversary thrown in that same time frame so it’s especially difficult to stay healthy!
Rather than getting the flu shot (which I am very against…more on this later) I choose to build my boys’ immune systems in addition to a daily multivitamin and cod liver oil. Since the baby is still nursing the only supplement he gets is vitamin D.
Here is what I give my (nearly) 4 year old during the Fall & Winter:
Sambucus (Black Elder Berry Syrup) (5,000mg daily) – you can make your own, and as soon as Mt. Rose Herbs has more in stock I will be doing so! In the meantime, you can buy some already made at Mt. Rose Herbs, Vitacost and Amazon. Just look for ones without sugar added in.
Vitamin D3 (1,000-2,000 iU daily) – We double up on our vitamin D supplements during the Fall and Winter. I am also sure to buy good quality raw milk, eggs from free-range chickens, and meat from grass fed animals who are allowed free access to sunlight – all are great ways to get that additional, essential Vitamin D. The baby gets 400 IU vitamin D, and 2 egg yolks every day.
Terrible Tonic (one spoonful daily of my kid’s recipe) – The garlic wards off viral and bacterial infections and boosts the immune system.
Easier said than done during the Holidays, I know :)
