When I made my homemade toothpaste, I expected it to work as well as the natural one I had been using which was pretty good: free of fluoride, and SLS, but still contained glycerin (which coats the teeth and can prevent remineralization) and was pretty expensive. I’ve been using my homemade toothpaste for about 2 months now and have been blown away by how superior it is to anything else I have tried.
Before, my tongue was often swollen and sore with some white film on it that would come and go, my gums were often a bit red along the gumline where I had some dental work done a few years ago, and I had a lot of sensitivity around a retained baby tooth (there is no permanent tooth there and I have been very fortunate to still have the baby tooth in tact!)
Since using my toothpaste I have not had one single day of swelling or soreness anywhere in my mouth, the dryness is gone as well as the white spots on my tongue! The sensitivity is completely gone from the baby tooth, and my teeth are whiter than they have ever been (and I used to regularly use bleaching trays from the dentist whom I worked for!). My gums are a nice, healthy, light-pink color. Also, because there is no coating of glycerin on my teeth (some studies have shown that it can take 3 months to remove it) I NEVER have any plaque build-up on my teeth. They stay clean all the time, even upon waking in the morning and after eating starchy or sugary foods.
If you find that the original formula is too salty, you can leave the salt out, however, I don’t mind it and love the benefits that I am receiving from it. In the batch I made today I used an unrefined salt called “real salt”. It comes straight from the sea and still has the beneficial minerals in tact. I also added xylitol to combat the saltiness, and it seems to be safe, natural, and supportive of oral health. I also used a bentonite clay powder instead of the liquid, which seems to be just as great!
I found this little glass jar with a swing-top lid at a garage sale for 50 cents, which is a perfect container for my son!
I’m working on an all-natural mouthwash…coming soon!
